I just finished working on this one with my friend Vishnu. I did mostly the matte painting part as this piece was meant for his compositing reel, do check it out and hope you guys like it :)
Here is a new matte painting which I did from scratch, though I started with a very loose concept sketch it went on changing and finally ended up with this one. Thanks a lot to my friend Igor (shamanik) for his valuable comments.
Lemme know what you guys think and thanks in advance for taking a look. Cheers, Rahul
Here is a must watch video by Garret Fry explaining comprehensively about all the matte painting workflows and pipelines existing in the modern visual effects industry.
It's been quite interesting times for global VFX for the past couple of weeks, though these are troubled times but it is much needed phase of industry which is getting matured. I think we have to wait and see how we going to come out of it and as usual stakes are always high for all the parties involved.
The issue have got enough attention in all media and thanks to all the grass root movements such as VFX Soldier, VFX Solidarity and VFX tipping Point. Also worth mentioning exceptional individuals such as Scott Ross, Scott Squires, Dave Rand who are in forefront of these movement and put up the recent VFX Townhall Google Hangout on this issue.
I think Scott Squires explained issue in a global perspective on the above video and it is really good see the issue taken up on an international perspective as the VFX is a global business now.
I think the key point here is the leverage of the production studios and the artists taking toll on the bottom the pyramid. It is crucial to note that cut-rate VFX will look shabby whether it's done in India, China or in US. The point is to stop cutting cost on the VFX and treat VFX as an actual production rather than a secondary service. I believe the production studios respect for VFX will make the directors and producer respect the VFX facilities which will in turn make the VFX facilities blossom and make room for VFX artists make a normal career out of this business.
I can't stress how important for all of us to realize that there is enough work for everybody and all the efforts should be put into developing this industry as whole rather than looking at local issues.
Its been really busy last 4 months back in Istanbul, Turkey and now I am finally back home. I had lot of fun in Istanbul and met some wonderful people and made really good friends who gave me beautiful memories. Work wise, it was quite good to back at some solid compositing in Nuke since I been focusing on matte painting quite a lot lately. So It feels great go back to roots with the all aesthetic experience I gained from matte painting jobs to apply it on more technique centric job that is film compositing.
I been keeping myself busy last week and I am very happy to finish my new reel and website which showcases most of good stuffs I did last year from "Eega" and "The Expendables 2".

Soon I will be off to Beijing, China for a short term gig at Base FX so I wouldn't blogging for a month or so.
I have been here in Istanbul, Turkey from early last month to work on a Kazakhstan Sci-Fi feature film "Phantom Hunt" at Ida Pictures as a Compositor / Matte painter. It's been pretty busy so far working mostly on comps shots and on some matte painting shots as well.
Istanbul is really beautiful, historical and scenic place and I been really enjoying my stay here so far though my work schedule keeps me at the studio mostly. But anyways, I am still managed to explore the city quite a bit with my foreigners friends at work. I guess things are going to be more exciting by next month since it will be getting to the wrap up stage of this project...
Well, the answer is quite easy as we need both purpose and profit to motive us but I think the interesting fact here is that innovations happen only when we have a larger than life purpose in our lives. Sadly this concept of purpose motive is generally lacking mostly in our economy and society. I think only very few successful entrepreneurs like Steve Jobs gets it, after all money is not everything...
